Chapter 38

Kate

Unable to return to the castle in her present state of mind, Kate left the safety of the walled garden and headed into the woods in the hope that the peace and quiet would soothe her soul and help her to think clearly, but first she had to allow her rage to burn out. She knew she was being unfair, but it helped to allow herself to be angry with the people who’d let her down: her father for dying and leaving her in this situation, her mother for becoming ill, and Luke for falling in love with that mouse of a girl. Kate liked Hannah but had never imagined that she’d be a serious contender for Luke’s love. She was beautiful, in that pale, unobtrusive sort of way, and kind, her eyes shining with warmth and good humor.

Of course Luke would want a woman like that rather than an outspoken, entitled hellion whose looks were better suited to a witch. Kate had never hated her raven-black hair and black eyes more. She wanted to shine like the sun and radiate peace and contentment. Instead, she bubbled like a cauldron of evil brew.

Finding a stump, Kate sat down, caring not a whit for her fine overskirt, and buried her face in her hands. What was she to do? How was she to go on? If she married Lachlan McRae, she’d forfeit the Stiles fortune, and that murderous fustilarian would win. That was the worst insult Kate could think of for Kit Larkin, but it did little to make her feel better. No amount of name calling would alter the situation. Larkin held all the power, and she had none. Her only tool was the quim between her legs, but it seemed Hannah’s quim had won the day.

Miserable and depressed, Kate sighed deeply and pushed to her feet. Her wedding was weeks away, and unless she came up with a solution, Kit Larkin would not only possess the estate but tarnish the noble Stiles bloodline with his depraved legacy.
